Have a go! This six week course is intended to introduce you to the skills and techniques that make story-telling so enjoyable. You might already keep a journal, or have written some poetry or short stories, but would like to discover the tools professional writers use to make their work publishable. This course runs in Auckland at 23 Princes St CBD and in Wellington at 150 Cuba St, CBD.
John Cranna, Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize shows you how to create powerful scenes; how to knit these scenes together into a riveting story; how to show rather than tell; how to write sizzling dialogue. We also look at the musicality of language, and the poetic effects that create memorable sentences. You will learn the five common traps that beginner writers fall into. As you progress you will begin to discover your own authentic voice.
The Wellington course is co-taught by John Cranna and Jess Wilson, a graduate of USA's top writing school, the Iowa Writers Workshop. Jess's writing has been published in the USA, and she is currently completing a PhD in Creative Writing at Victoria University.
In the CLASSROOM course we work singly, in pairs and in a group and your work is received and reviewed in a supportive way but with some constructive feedback. We create a fun and social atmosphere, and by the end of the course you will have completed a story of your own choosing.
In the ONLINE version of the course, you are guided by your own one-on-one personal tutor through the modules of the course, building a story of your own choosing, as you go. You will be supported and encouraged while you learn these new skills, but also given constructive feedback on how to improve.
In both versions of the course we provide you with a reading list for future guidance, plus a free follow-up workshop later in the year.
Thirty Creative Hub graduates have published novels or been successful in national writing awards in the last three years. See our Reviews and Successes page. Some of John Cranna's graduates are now publishing in New York and London.
Graduates of the Introductory course receive a 10% discount on our 30 Week Fiction / Memoir Course, taught by some of NZ's leading authors.
